Hello friends! The Canela team wishes everyone a Happy New Year. I know it's been a while. We've been very busy working on Appli and future products. Our approach was different in 2025. Appli is stable and very useful. As a result, we've been using Appli for all our new projects and will start converting some of our older projects to Appli as well.

This marks an important milestone for Appli. Our team depends on its fast development cycle and lower developer-to-project ratio to boost our growth. We're putting a strong effort into it. Whenever we find issues or opportunities to improve, we take the time to enhance Appli. You can follow our progress by checking out the change log available in the player and builder.

Before I discuss our first multi-app enterprise-level project, here are some of the Appli highlights for 2025.

I asked the team about their favorite improvements for 2025.
* Scale factor for desktop apps
* Many new/improved actions like: AI, timer, and array support
* Array support via no-code
* Event viewer
* Tabs for the low-code editor
* Debugger for low-code editor

We invite you to check out our new videos to learn more about these features https://www.youtube.com/@appli_io/videos.

If you have any questions, please post them on our forums https://forums.appli.io/.

Meet our first enterprise platform built entirely in Appli called Quizli (Quizli.net).

Let’s dive in. Quizli was originally intended to be a simple Appli technology demo. As we began attending trade shows to introduce Appli, we brought Quizli along as a working example. It was something tangible that demonstrated what was possible with low-code development.

Our typical flow was simple but powerful: Show Appli running live with Quizli’s code visible. We would demonstrate how quickly features could be built or modified. The goal was to show how easy the same project could run across a wide range of devices we had on hand at the trade show. What started as a demo quickly proved itself as something much more. The attendees began asking about how they could get Quizli. It did not take long for us to realize that Quizli had an audience. After doing market research and talking with educators, we got to work.

Two developers, one UI/UX designer, one content creator, and a project manager worked regularly for the next twelve months taking Quizli from a solid demo to what it is today, a complete platform for managing assessments in K-12 education.

Quizli includes a desktop teacher app, a companion mobile app, and a student app. We face a challenging environment in education. We need to support a wide range of hardware in schools. The student app must run on Windows, iPads, and/or Chromebooks. Teachers usually require Windows or macOS to run the teacher app, and we also need to support Android and iOS for the companion app.

The teacher app is used to manage all the assessments, classroom management, and generate reports. This is the core of the experience for educators. While Quizlis can be created manually, the real magic happens when teachers scan their teaching materials with the companion app and use our advanced AI features to create on-grade-level assessments. The tool helps the teacher meet state standards and fulfill their mandated requirements. This makes Quizli a huge time saver. Assessments are automatically graded and recorded in the gradebook as needed.

Not all Quizlis are designed to be recorded. Many are used as part of live instruction, where learning happens in the moment. Today’s educators often teach five or more ability levels within a single classroom. Quizli is part of the solution. It supports teachers by guiding students as they work through problems—without disrupting the lesson. Quizli accommodates multiple learning modalities and helps school districts meet Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requirements. The software makes it easy to tailor experiences for each student: learners can listen to questions, speak responses, type answers, or handwrite their work as needed. The experience is seamless and flows with instruction.

Our teacher-assisted features guide students on where to focus, helping them improve their answers with confidence. This targeted support brings clarity and structure to an increasingly challenging learning environment for both educators and students. Students can select a persona within Quizli to personalize their experience, including preferred voice and communication speed. These interactions remain private, giving students the freedom to explore, make mistakes, and ask for additional help without fear of embarrassment. The custom support stays on task with the students individualized program.

We have an agressive marketing campaign to promote Quizli this year. We will take full advantage of the excitement this platform is generating. We will introduce school districts to our free pilot program to see what the service provides. It is truly exciting to see this idea come to life.

Quizli answers a common question: Can you build real applications with low-code tools? The answer is a definitive yes. Appli enables teams to build faster than traditional coding approaches, allowing developers to focus more energy on what they want to create rather than how to make it work. Quizli is an enterprise-level platform similar in scale and complexity to NurseNotes.net. It is designed to support hundreds of millions of records. This is made possible through its integrated backend powered by LiveCloud.io, ensuring performance and scalability.

Appli’s actions and IDE have become increasingly powerful over the past few years. You might assume that bringing a program to life through clicking would be tedious and you’d be right. As developers, we know we can type far faster than even the most efficient clicker. That’s why Appli’s low-code editor works like a text editor. You type your actions directly, and as you do, all available parameters appear inline. Fill them in using simple dropdowns, press enter, and move on to the next line. It is fast and fluid.

The value of a company that makes software with its own development platform cannot be overstated. We trust Appli to be the basis of all our projects and we’re excited to leverage it to grow in ways that simply weren’t possible before. Appli is like having a full development team behind you. It amplifies your time and your ability to execute. There has never been a better time to build your business. Jump in and see what you can create with Appli.io.

Let's Talk
While most users prefer to communicate with us privately, we have noticed a nice uptick in our forums and Twitter, which is excellent. We are grateful to all of you for using Appli and are thrilled to see it being embraced. Do you have questions about Appli? Do you want to discuss what we are doing and how Appli may be helpful in your workflow? We enjoy talking with curious folks. The goal is to answer your questions and get you moving in the right direction - you entirely direct your call. A good chunk of our development direction comes from talking with people like you. We are developers, too. We know what it is like to get started with a new platform.

Appli Connect
We are pleased to announce the launch of Appli Connect, a game-changing technology that allows integration with external data and services. This will open up new possibilities for app development and allow users to integrate with virtually any service. OAuth 2.0 support is included when you need it. A new template showcasing Appli Connect with Dropbox, TimeAPI, Google, Microsoft, and Appwrite has been released, providing a detailed breakdown of how to use each service efficiently. We will also add more pre-built connections to popular services in the future.

To access this template, go to your project screen, click the account icon, and select the 'Refresh Apps' option to download the latest templates. Stay tuned for more details about Appli Connect on our YouTube space, documentation, and blogs. Please see our initial blog post about Appli Connect and how we use AI to help build current and future definitions. https://forums.appli.io/showthread.php?tid=667

Quizli ? Gamefy quizzing students
In addition to working on Appli, we are also engaged in two commercial SaaS projects. Today, we will focus on Quizli, an education service that provides a fun and engaging way to quiz students on any subject. The teacher may run quizzes on any device for students running on any device. Cool! Students play a game show-like experience while testing their knowledge of recent learnings.

Appli allowed us to develop our MVP in weeks instead of months or a year. It uses sockets to simplify the connection between the teacher and students; no internet is required. We use Appli to create new business opportunities, increase performance, and bring innovative ideas to the market.

New Actions
QR codes - Quickly generate QR codes for display on screen. You can use this to link computers together or direct users to a website. A single action does all the work and outputs an image element. Quizly uses this feature to connect students to their teacher's computer easily.

Sockets - Twelve socket actions are divided by host and client. Easily set up a server and have your apps connect. Authentication and security are built in. Quizli uses this feature for all interactions between students and teacher systems.

Files and folders - Seven new actions allow interaction with folders and their files. You can load and save content as text or binary.

Appli Onboarding Improved
We have made getting started with Appli a lot easier. Account creation is painless, and there is no need to verify your email or supply a credit card. You get instant access to our 'Growing Tier' for FREE! An optional quick tutorial instantly starts on the first run. It will guide new users in making a Hello World app.

New FAQs
Q: Can you use the LiveCode language in Appli?
A: Yes! Our built-in script editor allows you to create your functions and commands. The scripts integrate seamlessly with our low-code actions editor.

Q: Do my apps require the internet to run?
A: No. Your apps are local to the device. Your data can be either local, cloud, or hybrid (both). The internet is required if your app uses cloud data or your user wants to get an updated version of your app.

Q: Can I build standalone executables?
A: Soon, you can choose between Appli Player or Standalone executables to deploy your apps. This feature will require an appropriate developer account to submit to the various app stores.

Q: Do you have a feature to build reports?
A: Yes, we have twenty-five actions available that cover everything you need, such as creating, setting up, sorting, navigating, and printing. You can easily create complex reports.

Q: Are there limits to how many users can run my apps?
A: No. Appli apps scale well because the logic is client-side. Our technology leverages the power in your mobile and desktop devices to enjoy a more robust experience like faster app loading, complete offline support, and computation. We save the initial serving of your app, updates, and off-device data to the cloud. This design allows us to offer incredible scaling of users to run your app. It also lowers the cost of running independent clouds around the world.

Q: How is responsive design managed in Appli?
A: Responsive design is WYSIWYG in Appli. Your apps automatically hold their place as you designed them. The elements will automatically scale up or down and adjust to different aspect ratios. You have complete control over the result and can fine-tune it as needed.

That is it for now. Have a great week!

So, our family took the opportunity to vacation in California to see family and do touristy things.

One of the trip's highlights was working with Hutch on the La Crescenta Independence Day Fireworks show. Two of my sons and I participated in setting up the fireworks. We learned a lot and had a great time. Hutch is an accomplished special effects expert for entertainment and other industries. He uses his LiveCode development skills to support his various projects. Check out Hutch's website to learn more about him http://hutchfx.com.

Rejuvenated and full of energy, I am happy to be back with the team working on Appli. We have been working on some extensive features for Appli, and now I can discuss a few with you.

We have a significant time-saving new feature called Form Builder. Open Form Builder by clicking on its icon in the footer of Appli Builder. A window will show three pre-built forms with a fourth option to create your bespoke forms. Selecting a pre-built form will instantly generate a complete form, matching database table, data binding, and relevant buttons. This feature is the initial release, and we have exciting plans to make it even more helpful.

We appreciate you mentioning Appli to your friends and colleagues. Appli Builder has a new and improved onboarding experience that starts when making your account. We want people to be free to jump into Appli as quickly as possible with minimal friction. Our trial tier is easier than ever to get into. We are testing a no-credit card required experience. Appli will guide the new user towards making their first app or using a template to get started. The look and feel have been polished to match the UI of our website.

To support new and experienced users, we are releasing our new tooltip feature, Hover Assist. When you hover over supported parts of Builder, you will see a tooltip that provides more information to get you started. It is still being added system-wide, and not all visual support has been implemented. We decided to get some feedback early while we continued to work on the feature. The hover assist will link to the relevant documentation and provide an image, animated gif, and even a video where appropriate. We expect this feature to help people get started faster.

Did you know you can now manage your windows (low-code editor, variable viewer, data viewer, database manager, bug reporter, etc)? If you have two or more windows open, they can be arranged vertically or horizontally to improve your development experience.

Since Appli fully manages your apps and their organization, we are responsible for providing basic management options. We are happy to announce that you can now copy or move an app between projects. This feature and the ability to delete, rename, and save a project to disk are available from the My Projects screen.

Appli and Daysix https://www.daysix.co/ did a collaboration project where their professional designers used Appli Builder to design and build an app. They sent us the project when they finished their part. An Appli developer applied the logic and data to the project. It is an excellent example of the two disciplines working together as it would be done in larger studios. We learned a lot from the experience and improved Builder to better meet expectations from a designer's point of view. Kit Lister is the name of the app. The app will be available as a template in a day or two. It is an excellent example of a hybrid storage app where it works offline and syncs data to the cloud when able. Check it out for great ideas on how to do your next app. Like all our templates, feel free to use this template as is or modified for your private and commercial needs.

Our Appli AI support bot, based on OpenAI's ChatGPT, has been getting much use on the website. We brought it into Builder to provide immediate support for your questions. You can ask it how to do something in Appli, which usually gives a solid response. The bot was trained on our growing documentation and website. We noticed that its AI personality developed an annoying vibe, making it sound verbose and caviler with people's questions. We retrained it to be friendly without being silly. These are the early days of this technology. We are watching it carefully to ensure it provides accurate answers that will be helpful and succinct. You will find the icon to engage with the support feature in the footer of Builder.

Our goal to make developing software more approachable to a broader audience is becoming a reality. We have a range of new ways to communicate with us and the community coming. We love reading and responding to your questions on the forums. Our social media presence is lower but slowly growing. We must be everywhere to reach audiences that prefer a particular communication format. Please use the format you are most comfortable with. The links below will take you directly to them. I appreciate your support.

It is all the craze right now. Many well-known app-building services are looking at ways to bring this technology into their toolset. People have questions about our plans to integrate AI into Appli. I figured I would post our initial thoughts here for everyone to see. Everything is subject to change as Appli and AI evolve.

We have been looking at the technology to see if it can improve the app-building process. We think that Appli's coding style may connect well with a system that can take natural language and generate our block-style coding in the correct order.

That said, it needs to be good enough that it does not get in the way of an already quick system for coding. Having to resubmit queries to the AI will get old quickly. The technology would have to make a significant performance boost. The Appli app-building process today is already fast. Our minds are open, and we will tinker to see how things go.

We have found some practical uses for AI today. I am happy to announce that our first use of this technology is already on our appli.io website. It is pretty cool. Check out the chat bubble on the bottom right of the site's windows. You can ask questions about Appli and get answers that were trained from our documentation and website content.

We ran it through various tests and found it impressive with how well it delivers valuable information. In our testing so far, it could pick the correct Action and knew what needed to be selected for the argument/parameter. Pretty mind-blowing considering our training took us less than an hour to complete. I think partial credit goes to the source of our training material. Please post your experiences here.

We plan to add this same feature inside Appli Builder's header. The contextual search the bot provides is not a replacement for good documentation. It is simply another tool at our fingertips to get our work done. We will also add links to our docs because they are excellent and provide depth about any one topic in Appli. As we learn more, we will see if we can get the bot to generate links to the relative parts of our documentation.

I am optimistic that more use cases will become possible in the future. We aim to delight you with improvements to Appli that make sense. Let's keep making some great apps together.

Hello, Appli and LiveCloud supporters. We have been working on some important new features affecting Appli and LiveCloud.

We are improving our database with new features to enhance performance for apps that simultaneously manage multiple projects. If you are developing your apps in LiveCode, you might see slight improvements since most people work on one project at a time.

If you are working in Appli, you will see the performance of Builder increase dramatically because it manages awareness of all of your projects. Some of that improved performance is in there now. More to come in the coming weeks. Going from the login screen to loading your app is now much quicker. Plus, you can now develop offline for -most- of your development. We are working on the remaining pieces to cut the cord, allowing you to create free from any network. These features will be released to LiveCloud users as well.

We released -phase one- of the data modeler in Appli. Features like our powerful low-code editor with actions, data-binding, drag and drop CSVs to create a data table and local/cloud database, responsive design, to the simple deployment of an app without needing the App Stores.
I am so happy to announce that we have launched Appli today. It has been an incredible journey to get to this point. It took us 1586 days, or 52 months or 4.3 years, to arrive to this day.

We started with an idea to make databases more accessible to people. Our process began with us developing a front-end to our existing LiveCloud back-end. We realized that we wanted to reach the largest possible audience. This meant we needed to create a new platform with a new IDE built from the ground up to make database apps in a way that makes sense to our experienced team. We hope you like it as much as we do.

Like most developers, we severely underestimated the complexity and workload we were about to undertake. It is good that we did not realize this, or it might not have seen the light of day. I am so glad our vision was bright enough to set us on our path. We were full of enthusiasm and determination to see our vision through. Today is a culminating moment.

All said we are still trekking onward. We are just getting started on the parts that matter most to our users. The foundation has been laid for a robust framework. We can expand from here with the knowledge that all new features can rely on our investment in Appli.

Community involvement and cross-pollination is the key to a successful platform. You are a critical part of the Appli community process. To make this work we are designing multiple ways to make this happen.

Now-
Low-code Actions
We created a framework for our actions. The code is documented in each action. They come with supporting APIs. Each action is a complete module that contains the dictionary entry, UI management in the code editor, and the job of the action. You can study all the current actions to see how they work. If you are interested in accessing the framework of our actions, let us know. We are releasing this access to a select few right now. We will eventually have a developer portal to support this.

Present your projects and, if applicable, a business plan.
This can be done in a short paragraph. What are you making, who will use your app, and what are your challenges? We will review your submission and reach out to you. During these early days, you can get more free access to us. We can quickly develop supporting actions to help you reach your goal. Everyone wins!

Recognition
We have seen some of your projects. You have inspired our team to work on the things that matter most to you. We want to write exposes about you and your product launches. We want to actively help grow our community and provide another voice to promote your hard work.

Future-
Marketplace
We want to create a community where you can make your work available for free or for a fee. Help others reach their goals by creating template apps. The best community is one that meets a variety of needs. We see a place where people match people up with developers and designers. This is a huge undertaking. So it will take time to flesh it out completely. It is on our roadmap.

We are most thankful to have you in our community. If you have used a promo code to use Appli, we are happy to announce that your code has been extended well beyond the original 45 days. Some of you have enjoyed early access for more than two years. Your input deserves recognition as an extension to your free access. Please enjoy a bonus of 60 days. After which, we appreciate you moving to one of our available tiers to continue living the dream of quicker app development.

Best regards,

Another Wednesday release is in the can. Your IDE will auto-update with all the new goodies. Your phones and tablets have a pending update waiting for you to download. We now have proper iPad support. Make sure you get that specific build for your iPad if you have previously installed the iPhone version.

-WHAT'S NEW?
The last time we spoke, I told you we were going to focus on making a bunch of useful templates. And so we are. While doing this, we occasionally see a bug or missing feature we need to make our template. We file the bug or request in our system. They get prioritized and completed within a day or two. The templates are shaping up. We can't wait to release them and get your feedback.

I know we said we were locking our features down. But, we had to apply some energy to our database side of Appli. After all, we are trying to bring databases to the masses. How can we say we are doing that without providing a way to see your tables? In our data section, we now provide a way for you to access any of your tables with a simple-to-use viewer.

The data viewer has all the features of its older cousin in the LiveCloud Manager. It uses all the technology found in our table element. It is the first time we have brought something from Appli to the LiveCode side of our development. This saved us a lot of time because the table element has many features that we just happened to need in our data viewer. This new feature will solve the need to use LCM to verify that your data is working as expected. And, you can check your local and cloud data with a simple button click.

Every update comes with some nice improvements and bug fixes. This release will not disappoint. We already have two full days of development completed for next Wednesday's release. Three more days remain before we push another update. Until then, please enjoy this latest version.

-MEET THE TEAM
We received a lot of positive feedback about our meet-the-team write-up in the last edition. We thought it would be fun to talk about the rest of our team, one person at a time. Everyone in our small group is interesting. It is impossible to pick. So I will go in alphabetical order by their first name. In this edition, we will talk about Debra Nameth.

Debra has been with Canela longer than any other employee. Debra wears a lot of hats. She is our office manager and keeps the ship well-lubricated. This job alone takes full advantage of her organizational and people skills.

Wait, she is our front-line tech support for 2020 Vision and NurseNotes. Over the years, she has become an expert in helping others with various technical issues. Debra has a way of making the most frustrated person feel at ease. She is patient because most of the time, the solution was to change the batteries in their remote control. Sometimes she needs to work with IT in the education or business setting. Her expertise with Mac and Win operating systems helps the less initiated deal with challenging details she easily eats for breakfast.

Or is she the one customers rely on when ordering more 2020 Vision or NurseNotes systems? Those particular products and their sales decisions are very relational in nature. She writes, updates, and generally maintains all of the contracts. She helps first-time users install the software. She points them to our documentation. She keeps our large audiometer fleet calibrated by managing the sea of shipments back and forth. Should a customer need more hardware, Debra has you covered.

Sometimes customers need new computers with the software pre-installed. Debra does that too. If you call our company phone number, she answers the phone. If you email for support, chances are she will get a response to them before anyone does.

She manages invoices, purchase orders, shipping, and receiving. Debra is better than a Swiss Army knife. She not only does it all, but she also does it well.
Plus, Debra is usually the only one that gets my quirky pop culture references.

A few Appli Wednesday updates have gone by. I figured it was a good time to discuss our status.

-Appli Status
We are trying very hard to get our first release out the door. It will be a 0.9x release initially. We are almost feature-ready for the launch. We decided to add one more feature to the launch version. We are building some valuable templates.

New users to Appli will find the templates a great place to start. The templates are free to use for any purpose, including commercial. You can modify them, tear them apart to see how things can be done, change them completely to something else, and do what you want. There is nothing better than learning from working app examples.

-New Team Members
Over the last few months, we hired three new employees to our team. I will tell you a little about them. You probably know a couple of them already.

Kayla Hoang is a recent computer science graduate from UC Irvine in California. She comes to us with great enthusiasm to see Appli reach its goals. She has been a great addition to our team. She has added many new actions to the low-code options. Her keen eye for detail has prompted her to cherry-pick cleaning up the IDE. She has picked up LiveCode very quickly and is already taking on more complex aspects of Appli.

Tom Gold joined us a little after Kayla. He is a seasoned LiveCode developer whom I would suspect everyone already knows. He recently participated in the LiveCode Mega Bundle with the addition of the AppStarterStack.Tom came to us with a wide range of experience in LiveCode and other languages and development platforms. Tom's recent work in Appli includes improving the low-code editor with many new features we have come to love.

Andre Garzia requires no introduction to those that have used LiveCode for any amount of time. We had contracted Andre to write our documentation. He tells me that Appli gets updated so frequently that our screenshots and written docs need constant updating. Now, we can reveal that Andre works full-time for us. He is continuing to work on the documentation and taking on some new roles. Andre is building some of the Templates discussed above. He will also be our voice in broadcasting to the world via various social networks that Appli is ready to play.

We are so fortunate to have our new additions to the team. Because of them, we are going to get a whole lot more completed very quickly.

-Free Swag!
If you have posted in the Appli forums or provided some bug reports, we will send you an Appli t-shirt. If you do not hear from us asking for your shipping address, please ping us at hello@appli.io.

We are working on a significant update to the low-code features in Appli. For this reason, we did not post any updates for 1.5 weeks. The changes to the low-code editor will temporarily cause your actions for your elements not to work. We are working on an update that will auto-update your actions for you. If you can not wait, you can copy and paste your actions back into an event. Doing so will make the actions work again.

You can now fold your action flows for easier reading. Copy and paste of actions are here. Shift-click your code to highlight your flows and right-click to copy and paste. Did someone say code validation is needed? When your action flow is red, you may have forgotten to complete an action. A green action flow indicates all is good. More events are now available. We are still working on fully supporting some of the new events.

We revamped the onboarding screens with more consistent visuals that better match the Appli branding. The experience is easier on the eyes and makes more sense as you build projects.

We significantly improved notch and chin support on phones. All you need to do is identify the elements you want to be drawn into a notch zone. For example, the background to your header may draw into the notch area. If your header is a group, select the group and check the box for 'Stretch Y to fill notch' in the property inspector.

We hope you are enjoying the new project support in Appli. You can easily see all your apps in a single project. We expanded the number of devices you can create per project from one to as many as you want. You can make as many phones, tablets, and desktop apps as you see fit in the same project.

The deciding factor usually is your data. If you need different apps to access the same data or subsets of the same data, now you can do it. If you are making software for a client that needs different apps for their business, this feature has you covered.

We added a visual tool for binding your data to your elements. Click on the form element's no-code. The standard table binding feature and a new button to 'Add Key' will be seen. From here, you can bind your keys to your elements.

It is always good catching up with all of you. Have a great weekend, and we will see you next week!

My name is Mark Talluto. Welcome everyone to Appli. This incredible project has been under development for more than three years. We are happy to announce that we are in an open beta stage.

Please feel free to give Appli a try. You can use the following promo code: 45DAYAPPLI
No credit card is required when using this code.

Appli is a no-code and low-code environment for making data-driven apps. We designed the IDE to resemble tools commonly used by designers like Adobe XD, Figma, and Sketch. These incredible tools give designers the features they need to express their ideas visually. We want designers to feel at home when using Appli.

The best part is that most of the code your apps need is automatically written for you. There are times when you will want to add some logic and data to your app. You can do this very quickly with our low-code design.

Use your app on your mobile device or allow others access. Your unique app code is all you need. You may use the code in the Appli Player - available on both the iOS and Android app stores for free. The Appli Player may contain as many apps as you like.

Give Appli a try and see how quickly you can make apps today!
